What to know about carrying a handgun in Arkansas

Anyone permitted to carry a handgun in Arkansas can get into trouble if they fail to comply with relevant regulations. It’s crucial to be informed about gun laws. For example, the restrictions that apply to the location where you want to carry your handgun.

Here is what to know:

Constitutional carry

Arkansas enacted Act 777 in 2023, allowing permitless concealed carry. This rule is commonly referred to as constitutional carry. Thus, a resident can carry a concealed handgun without a license.

Concealed Handgun Carry License

Before becoming a constitutional carry state, Arkansas required residents to have a Concealed Handgun Carry License (CHCL) to take a concealed handgun to places that prohibit firearms. The state still issues this license so residents can comply with the gun laws of other states they travel to where permits are required.

To apply for it, you need to find an approved instructor through the Arkansas State Police website to take you through the CHCL firearms safety training class. After completing the course, the instructor will provide you with two separate training certificates – a completed basic Concealed Handgun Carry License training certificate and an Enhanced Concealed Handgun Carry License training certificate.

You will then apply for your CHCL online or on paper and pay the required fees. Ensure you provide complete and accurate information. Submitting false information or incomplete forms may result in a denial of the license.

Despite having a CHCL, carrying a handgun is still prohibited in certain locations, such as a police station, a sheriff’s station, any courthouse/courtroom, any part of a prison or residential treatment facility and some government buildings.

The confusion surrounding gun laws can cause you to make a costly mistake. It’s important to be adequately informed before buying a handgun. If you are already in trouble, legal guidance can help you understand your options.
