What should you do when stopped by the police?

The police can stop you if they have reasonable suspicion that you may have committed, are committing or are about to commit a crime. For example, if they witness you violating a traffic law. Further, the police may stop you if you are in a location where a crime was committed or hanging around people being monitored.

Law enforcement officers in Arkansas can also stop someone for loitering if they are lingering, remaining or prowling in a public place or someone else’s property without a clear reason and under circumstances that raise concerns. For example, loitering near a school building without a legitimate reason related to the school.

If you are stopped by the police, it’s vital to know what to do to avoid escalating the situation. Here is what to do:

Remain calm

You should remain calm when interacting with the police. Avoid sudden movements and use a respectful tone when responding to questions.

Follow the officer’s direction

When stopped by a police officer, they will likely identify themselves by providing their name and badge number. Then, they will give you directions to ensure safety.

If you are driving, they can ask you to pull over safely and turn off the engine. If it’s at night, they will ask you to turn on the interior lights. When the officer approaches your car, they may tell you to keep your hands on the steering wheel. These will be followed by further directions, depending on the reason for being stopped.

If an officer stops you on the street, they will instruct you to identify yourself. They may ask why you are in that location. The officer may also request to pat you down if they suspect you are concealing a weapon.

Although it’s critical to cooperate with the police, you need to be aware of your rights. Being adequately informed can ensure you always have calm interactions without incriminating yourself.
